The Sudden Surge of Data Center Hate

  There was a time in this country where when companies wanted to come in a build something, especially in the tech sector that would allow new technologies and investment in land - that would be celebrated. Around 17 years ago in fact, with the boom of "the cloud" through the launches of Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure in 2008 to compete with AWS. To support these services, which gave rise to things such as streaming and better online game play, these companies had to build large data centers - and for 17 years, these data centers lived in peace among us. Somehow though, now in 2026 there has been a surge of anti-data center anger that mimics the anti-large scale factory movement of the late 1800's. Often with the same messaging too - it will take our beautiful land, it will take jobs from skilled people, etc. It seems much louder with data centers though, with many cities declaring a moratorium on building them, with some speculation that Russian and Chinese disinforma...
